Large crowd gathered at Athens Old Fiddlers Reunion event outdoors.

The Athens Old Fiddlers Reunion is a beloved annual event that celebrates the rich heritage of fiddle music and string music, drawing musicians and enthusiasts from across Texas and beyond. Since its inception in 1932, the reunion has grown to be one of the most notable fiddling festivals in the country, making Athens, Texas, a must-visit destination for lovers of traditional music.

Origin

The event began during the Great Depression, a time when communities sought ways to bring people together through simple joys and community engagement. The first Old Fiddlers Reunion was organized by a group of local farmers to promote their crops and foster local pride and economic activity. From the start, it was clear that the community had a deep appreciation for traditional music, and the annual reunion quickly became a cherished tradition.

In those early years, fiddlers from all over East Texas would gather on the courthouse square, bringing with them tunes passed down through generations. The atmosphere was informal yet competitive, as musicians showcased their talents and engaged in friendly contests. Over time, the Athens Old Fiddlers Reunion grew, both in reputation and in the number of participants, evolving into a larger festival that still retains its grassroots charm.

Tradition

The event has always been more than just a competition. It’s a celebration of the art of fiddling, a musical style deeply rooted in Texas history. Fiddling is a cornerstone of American folk music, and the Athens event has helped preserve and promote music education for nearly a century. What makes fiddling unique is its ability to blend the past and present, with musicians paying homage to traditional tunes while also adding their unique flair.

Throughout the decades, the Athens Old Fiddlers Reunion has welcomed some of the best fiddlers in the country. Many dignitaries and notable players, including contest champions and renowned musicians, have graced the stage, further cementing the event’s place in the fiddling world. From seasoned veterans to young local talent, the reunion offers a platform for musicians of all ages to share their skills.

Today

Held annually on the courthouse square in downtown Athens and at the Historic Texan Theater - a Landmark Venue, the Old Fiddlers Reunion continues to attract large crowds. The event usually takes place the 3rd weekend in April, with the highlight being the fiddling competition, where musicians of all skill levels compete for prizes and the coveted Open Fiddlers Championship. In addition to the competitions by division, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including live performances on the main stage at the square, jam sessions, street dances, artisan booths, a classic car show, kiddie fair, family games, and a diversity of food vendors, making it a family-friendly event that appeals to all.

As the reunion has grown, so has its scope. While fiddling remains the centerpiece, the event has expanded to include other musical genres, such as bluegrass, jazz, blues, country, and Western swing, reflecting the evolving tastes of attendees while still honoring the core traditions.

Impact

For Athens, the Old Fiddlers Reunion is more than just a music festival. It’s a time for the community to come together, celebrate its heritage, and welcome visitors from near and far. The festival brings a significant economic boost to the area, as local businesses benefit from the influx of tourists and donations. More importantly, it strengthens the sense of local pride and tradition, passing down the love of fiddling and traditional music to new generations.

Future

As the Athens Old Fiddlers Reunion approaches its 100th anniversary, it continues to thrive, evolving with the times while staying true to its roots. The reunion remains a testament to the power of music to bring people together, bridge generations, and preserve cultural traditions. Whether you’re a seasoned fiddler, a music enthusiast, or simply someone looking for a taste of authentic Texas culture, the Athens Old Fiddlers Reunion is an event that resonates with the heart and soul of East Texas.
